Today I had the distributor out of the Cowley and I found that drops of petrol were coming out of the vacuum advance unit when I shake the distributor.

I'm sure that is not meant to happen!

How can I avoid this from occurring? I imagine that I could make the vacuum pipe go uphill more, but I am worried I may break it in its old age.

The inlet manifold depression should have the opposite effect. Like you say, a slight downhill angle ought to resolve the problem. Bend it gently!

A lot of Lucas equipped vehicles had a fuel trap in the vac line. I never could work out how they decided which application got one.

You can still get the tube with the vapour trap in it.

That's an MGA one from Moss - Morris Minor one is still available as well.

The vapour trap was to stop the fumes attacking the rubber diaphragm.

I think we knew that, just wondering how they decided which cars to put them on as they didn't appear to be universal.

OK lets start from the other end, what cars did not have it as original equipment?, this may throw some light on it.

Went out to the Campbelltown steam day yesterday, the A40 club had a display, one was fitted with a Holden Commodore V6 engine and auto trans also a Volvo rear end with disc brakes, discs on the front, what a sleeper, you would never know until you got blown off!.

My 59 Oxford doesn't have one now. But that's not to say it didn't have one originally.
