There is an alumimium spacer against the inlet manifold then a black phenolic spacer.

My friend who is a very experienced BMC mechanic says that on later cars (probably 1970's) the SU spacers were often aluminium only - no phenolic ones.

Are the phenolic ones necessary? What would happen if I replaced it with another aluminium one?

The phenolic ones available today from Burlen are about 5mm narrower than the old ones I had from a 6/99 (...that I have misplaced...) and I want the extra distance so I can fit a larger heatshield between the exhaust manifold and the carbs.

The aluminium spacers are the same size as the '3-piece' 6/99 phenolic insulators and I have a couple of spare ones.

I would think that with only aluminium ones, you would get excessive heat ransfer to the carbs.

That's my understanding of why they are there. Nothing to stop you fitting another ally one as well.
